Anyone have a plot iron I can borrow...

Ever have a plot that looks like this...

...when what you need it this?
That's about where I am and it's driving me crazy. I know who my characters are, I know what I want to happen, I even know how it will end, but for some reason, something is off. It's almost like there is one large key thing missing and if I could just figure out what that is, everything will fall into place.

Does that make sense?

Problem is, I have been going at this issue for almost two weeks, and so far, no epiphanies. I have done all the things I usually do - notes, sketches, watched movies, make cookies, took showers, etc. (Yes, some of my best ideas come with during baking or showering, don't know why...) Yet still, I'm at a loss. Should I just start writing and see what happens? Should I wait for the last piece to come for me? I just don't know.

So I'm looking for ideas? What do you do when you are missing that one last thing?...

This is not mine, but it looks like an accurate image of
my brain right now and made me smile.

  1. I'd say just start writing. A lot of what I write works itself out as I am writing. I do outline but it isn't detailed. So I say give it a go and see if it just come to you. Let your character's speak to you, as corny as that sounds.

  2. I TOTALLY agree with Lauren. Let your characters decide where they want to go. Sometimes if you just sit down and write, something you never even expected will just come out. ;o)

  3. Yeah, I really need to just have a go at it and see what happens. I never have my stories outlined in their entirety, just the basic stuff.

It's actually fun to go back to my old notes for the book I have just finished and look at all the changes that happened without my even thinking about it. I basically sit on the couch talking to myself, "Oh yeah, I forgot about that!" or "Why did I take that out?" or "Man, that was supposed to happen? That would never have worked!"... and the like.
